On January 10, 2023, a massive rockslide occurred on State Route 208 in Wilson Canyon, closing the highway from Hudson Aurora Road to NV-339 indefinitely. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has been working with Lyon County to clean up and reopen the canyon as safely and as quickly as possible. Status updates are provided below.
State Route 208 Wilson Canyon Updates
2/24/23 Update - State Route 208 will be open to one-lane pilot car traffic on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 5:00am-8:00am and 5:00pm-8:00pm (normal commute hours). On Sunday, February 26, 2023 the canyon will be open all day to one-lane pilot car traffic from 5:00am - 8:00pm. This is weather dependent. Check road conditions on Nevada Roads 5-1-1 website before you travel.
2/17/23 Update - State Route 208 will be open to one-lane traffic on Saturday, February 18, 2023 and Sunday, February 19, 2023 from 5:00am - 8:00pm. Latest 208 closure information will be available on the Nevada Roads 5-1-1 website.
2/10/23 Update - NDOT to Open State Route 208 during commute hours only.
Alternate Routes
The Lyon County Office of Emergency Management developed an
interactive map to identify alternate routes between Yerington and Smith Valley.
The primary alternate route for NV-208 is through Carson City, when possible. Mason Pass Road is only recommended for high clearance and four-wheel drive vehicles.
