Lyon County received a complaint this morning that Road Department personnel were harassing wild horses near Lahontan Street and U.S. 95A in Silver Springs. Lyon County's initial investigation has determined that an employee operating a street sweeper observed a group of horses moving toward U.S. 95A and the employee began to move the horses east away from the highway. A second vehicles, a 4000 gallon water truck, was following the sweeper. Both vehicles initial assignment was to complete repair work on Eureka Street.
Lyon County anticipates that the investigation will be complete by the end of the week. Lyon County has a significant problem in dealing with the horse population along the U.S. 50 Corridor and U.S. 95A from Silver Springs to Fernley. Lyon County is reaching out to a number of state agencies to determine how to best move the horses that are close to the highway and to develop policies of when and how to safely take action. Lyon County will be filing a report with the Sheriff's Office to ensure transparency.
